Crowns cover, splint, and protect a tooth.  Without a crown, these teeth are prone to fracture, which may necessitate further treatment such as a root canal or even an extraction.  A crown restores the tooth to its original functionality (you can now eat whatever you want again), and prevents further damage or possible tooth loss.
